The Carson long-cuff mitten displays a sleek beadwork design on the gauntlet. These mittens are named for Christopher Houston Carson, better known as Kit Carson. Carson left home at 16 to become a mountain man and trapper in the West. He became a frontier legend in his own lifetime. His understated nature belied confirmed reports of his fearlessness, combat skills, and tenacity. Although he was famous for much of his life, historians have written that Kit Carson did not like, want, or even fully understand the fame that he experienced during his life.
They are hand-sewn in the USA from high-quality grey suede leather with hand-stitched beadwork on the gauntlet and are lined with Polartec® High Loft insulation. Working directly with a tannery in the USA, we developed a suede leather, injected with silicone during the tanning process for further waterproofing, that is extremely durable yet retains great dexterity. The length and cut of the mitten allows for a jacket to slide fully inside without bunching while providing a close fit that protects the wrists and hands from snow on the heaviest of powder days.
As each leather mitten is hand-sewn and uses natural materials, every mitten will possess slight variation in the look of the leather, beadwork, and fur trim. Astis embraces these subtle differences and views them as unique mittens more akin to works of art.
